Regenerative Drive

Residential and commercial buildings have a great impact towards energy consumption which has steadily increased reaching figures between 20% and 40% in developed countries. More specifically, almost 60% of the world’s electricity is consumed in residential and commercial buildings. Elevators represent 2-5% of the energy used in a typical building but during the busy periods of their daily operation, elevators could account for as much as 50% of a buildings’ energy consumption.

A conventional traction elevator system consists of a cabin, a counterweight, and a machine. The counterweight is designed to balance a half-loaded cabin.

The excess energy is consumed in VVVF resistors and is dissipated as heat in the environment.

There is a better, greener alternative. The usage of Regenerative Drive replaces the traditional braking resistor and can be used alongside the elevator drive. When an overhauling situation exists, the regenerative unit goes active and commutates energy back onto the building to be consumed by other loads, such as lighting or HVAC.
